MIDWIVES
SWEET ARRIVALS MIDWIFERY
Cindy Foxfoot, LM
I am a midwife first and foremost because I love birth! I love the power of it, the strength it brings forth, the natural beauty of it and the transformation that happens for the family. I strongly believe that families deserve respect, time, education, and individualized care to have the birth they choose. Midwifery allows for all this and more. I have seen hundreds of women birth wildly, naturally, wonderfully in their strength. I believe 100% in women’s ability to grow, birth, nurse and love their baby!
My role as a midwife is to guide you in the birth that you want to have. Having a natural childbirth at home can be the most empowering event in one’s life and is a great opportunity for bonding for the whole family. It is my role to enable trust and belief in oneself and the birthing process- to facilitate a safe passage for all. I take the time to develop this trust and to provide education to women and their families so that they may make informed decisions. You have a say, you take responsibility. This is your baby and your birth. Good prenatal care is a balance of nutrition, exercise and relaxation. It’s normal day to day living. Midwifery care monitors normal well-being and strives to maintain health and trust in one’s body. There are many subjects that will be discussed: available testing, fetal development, relaxation techniques, breastfeeding, and newborn care. It is my job to uphold your personal beliefs and values and to empower you as you continue this journey in life.
I am deeply grateful to have served this community for the last 30 years and to continue to be able to as a community midwife, I am blessed to be doing this work.
Changing the world one birth at a time.

SIERRA HOMEBIRTH
Jessica Mairs, LM, CPM
I am a homebirth midwife because of my love and respect for women and babies, and a desire to see them experience the birth process in a manner that honors their dignity and power.
I am a licensed midwife, graduate of Birthingway College of Midwifery, and a mother myself. I work with a student midwife who is an RN, and a certified birth assistant. We enjoy offering our comprehensive midwifery services and feel honored to help babies be born in a way that is peaceful, joyful, and calm.
As a midwife, we value creating a relationship of trust by providing women and their families with individualized, compassionate care during the childbearing year. We facilitate personal, informed decision-making through the midwifery model of care and evidence-based practices.
We recognize that birth is a natural process and strive to create an undisturbed, private, and safe environment with the attendance of your trusted birth attendants, utilizing the lowest amount of interventions as possible with respect to the well-being of the mother and baby.
Pregnancy and birth are times of sacred transformation, for the woman, baby, and family. Homebirth can provide an opportunity to grow personally, emotionally, and spiritually. Birth can be joyful, creative, transformative, and empowering.

MERCY OCEANS MIDWIFERY
Dania Shelton LM, CPM
I provide women with good quality care in their child-bearing life and guide them into the new phase of their lives as parents. The way you birth helps to create a strong foundation for the mother, father, and baby as a family. I believe that good prenatal and postpartum support helps the transition into a strong, loving family unit. I am the mother of 5 and grandmother of 5. My children range in age from 17-31. I am privileged to have been the midwife for my grandchildren. I enjoy motherhood and have an inexhaustible passion for birth.
I have attended births for since 2004 and licensed since 2010, so over 18 years of experience in home birth. It has been an honor to be witness to so many beautiful, spiritual, and empowering births. My experience in midwifery consists of apprenticing with a home birth midwife for 6 years and training in a high volume birth center in Texas. My formal studies were completed through the National Midwifery Institute, which I graduated from in 2010. I maintain emergency and first aid top-level requirements. I am also continuously learning and taking classes to always broaden my knowledge and skills to be able to provide the very best care that there is.
Birth is a sacred and special time for a family. My goal is to honor each family and to keep the space for this new family holy and sacred.

NEXT GENERATION MIDWIFERY
Ariana Cohen, LM, CPM
I discovered my passion for midwifery when I attended my very first birth in 2009. I knew right then that I was meant to be a midwife and spent the next 3 years preparing for formal midwifery education and training. I became a Doula, Childbirth Educator and Prenatal Massage Therapist while completing my degree in Social and Behavioral Sciences. After graduation I enrolled in the National Midwifery Institute and was granted an apprenticeship with Sweet Arrivals Midwifery in my hometown of Nevada City, California.
After eighteen months of home birth experience, I moved to El Paso, Texas and completed my clinical training in a busy, high-volume birth center. Additionally, I stayed in Texas another year to focus on advanced skills such as vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC), twins, breech birth and other special circumstances. During that time I assisted at extraordinary births and learned critical skills for clinical practice, midwifery education, and business management. I also assisted teaching classes on suturing, fetal monitoring, charting, and more. In 2015, I graduated from the National Midwifery Institute, passed the North American Registry of Midwives examination and was granted my License by the Medical Board of California. Since then I’ve been serving families in Nevada, Placer and Sacramento counties and surrounding areas.
In February of 2022, I finally welcomed my own sweet daughter into the world in my own home and in my own bed with the loving support of two Licensed Midwives. Now that I’ve experienced midwifery care and home birth personally, I have a whole new appreciation for the work that we do and the service that we provide. This is personal, individualized care at its absolute best. Having a midwife feels like a luxury, but its one that all women should have access to. With over 12 years experience and more than 370 births under my belt, I am proud to offer safe, supportive and empowering midwifery care services to the greater Sacramento area.
I believe midwifery is the future of maternity care. Our healthcare system needs more independent providers that challenge the status quo and who provide excellent, safe, and supportive care to birthing families. As such I am committed to training future midwives and often have midwifery students assist me in prenatals, births, postpartum appointments and administration. Midwifery is an art, a science and a passion all rolled into one. I’m completely committed to supporting birthing parents and growing families through the entire childbearing cycle and beyond.

BAKER MIDWIFERY
Heather Baker, LM, CPM
As a midwife, I am passionate about educating and caring for families throughout their journey to parenthood and beyond. I am a strong advocate for birth choices and truly believe birth works best when families feel safe and respected and have the space to birth instinctually. The way we give birth matters. The way that we are born matters. I am dedicated to the families I serve and grateful for the opportunity to empower families while welcoming babies Earthside with love and support.

KAYLA FRANKS
CNM and Nurse Practitioner
I was born and raised in Grass Valley, and I am so excited to be able to provide this community with respectful wellness care and home birth. I am passionate about holistic, client-centered care and feel strongly that women know their bodies and deserve to be heard and respected.
My health education began with a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Chico State and was continued with a dual Master’s degree from Georgetown University. I am board-certified as a Certified Nurse Midwife and a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner. These degrees allow me to provide health and wellness care from menses throughout the lifespan for women, including childbirth and care of the newborn.
I trained in childbirth in and out of the hospital, which gives me a unique perspective. I started my midwifery career in a high-volume birth center, where I attended births both in the birth center and in client homes. I returned to Grass Valley to start my practice and be with family. Home birth is where my heart is. I am one of the approximately 1-2% of CNMs who attend home birth in the US.
My passion lies in giving power back to women, back to the family, and back to birth. I love being able to spend my career supporting women throughout their lives in their health and wellness, and I consider it a true honor to share my knowledge and support them throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. I consider midwives guardians of normal birth and believe that my job is to guide and provide education, information, and options to my clients so that they can make the choices best for their bodies and babies.
I also recognize that not all families are fit for home birth for various reasons. I also provide co-care to families birthing in the hospital for prenatal and postpartum support when they want more than they can get from the hospital-based system.
